Hi, I am looking into getting a PR4100 NAS. I already have (have had it for years) a large APC Smart-UPS that is not on the list of tested devices and no way would I invest in another since the one I have is more than enough power and is expensive. I have checked out the manual for the PR4100 and it only talks about network UPS in relation to a chain of multiple PR4100s, one of which would still need to be hooked up to the only USB port on the UPS, which I can’t do because that’s connected to my computer currently. If I were to change to network monitoring of my UPS, is there a way to get the PR4100 to connect to the UPS over the network so that it can be automatically safely shutdown in case of a long outage that wears the UPS battery down (unlikely, but you never know)?
FYI, my hi-end WD NAS is connected to a minimalist size UPS. I do not live in an area of frequent and long term power outages. Like most people though, I am subject to momentary power “blips” where the UPS keeps the NAS running, and when blip is over, no worse for the wear. If the power blip returns indicating a possible long term outage, my UPS has enough power to allow me to turn off the power of NAS via it’s power switch. Once power resumes, it is OK to turn on NAS power again.
Mike, my UPS can keep things running for a while, but if I am not home, such as being on a trip, I cannot push the button to turn the NAS off. And, no, turning the NAS off when on a trip completely defeats one-third of the purpose of it (easily accessing my files while away, as well as having RAID and remote off-site backup to a second NAS), so that isn’t an option. It is rare to have a long outage, but it does happen.
You could always test it at home while there by unplugging NAS from UPS to see what happens if it is possible to sync your UPS and my cloud… WD cannot test with every UPS and can only do a few.
Mike, my question is whether or not it is possible, as I don’t currently have the networking add-on insert for the UPS, so I would prefer not to buy it if someone has tried it and knows it doesn’t work. Looks like nobody here has tried it, though, so I will continue to Google it.
