PR4100 Network Up/Down?

Has anyone experienced, or is experiencing, the current behavior I am seeing with connectivity on the PR4100 under OS5? On the Setting/Network screen, under Network profile, the Status keeps changing about every 30-45 seconds between Internet Access and No Internet Access. I check on the app (iOS) and it bounces between local and relay as well. I also keep losing local access to Plex running on the device, as well as losing access to the device over the Internet. Occasionally, when I try to access the device via the local IP, I get a blank “Hello World” page. If I wait 30-45 seconds, it then allows access to the internal page.

Steps taken to rule out local issues:

  1. Changed network port on PR4100 between 1 and 2, no change
  2. Changed out ethernet cord, no change
  3. Switched ethernet port on the router, no change
  4. Moved to an ethernet port on the switch, no change

I initially thought it was an issue with the latest firmware, but I downgraded to 5.10.122 but same issue, but it feels more pronounced since the latest 5.11.112. It’s the only device on my network that does this, my PIA VPN and work VPN never drop connection through my home network. I monitored several devices while the connectivity kept changing on the PR4100, nothing else exhibits this behavior. I don’t get notices from the device that connectivity has been lost like I do when I physically unplug the ethernet from the device.

The “Internet Access” is only doing a ping to 8.8.8.8.
If it’s bouncing, there’s probably an issue with packet losses

Thanks for the find, it’s not any type of latency or jitter, been running those via Ookla, and they mirror the result that I ran off the tool you shared. Can’t figure out why I didn’t find that message before about the ping to 8.8.8.8. Well, I guess I have to find out more, not sure if maybe there is something the ISP is doing to cause intermittency to Google DNS, router is using the ISP DNS.

Given that, that doesn’t appear to explain that when it shows No Internet Access, I can’t access the internal page and get ‘Hello World’ to the assigned IP, or why Plex is also inaccessible when it’s No Internet Access, as well as the OS5 APP showing it bouncing between local and relay mode and not accessible. Will keep digging.

Also getting very great results to GDNS, ran these several times during the times the device was showing No Internet Access from the PC through the same network:

Also, for giggles, changed the PR4100 to Google DNS, still shows No Internet Access intermittently.

As an interesting aside, and a lesson learned for this type of device, I did a hard power down from the wall out, including the PR4100. After firing back up the gateway, then switch, then PR4100, it has been stable and hasn’t been bouncing between status in the network profile. I did this prior, but never fully powered down the PR4100, only rebooted the device once the gateway came back online.

I performed the shutdown via the mobile iOS app. I don’t see the ability to do a full power down in the web portal, other than hibernating or reboot in the Settings/Utility menu. The full shutdown appears to have been the elixir. Perhaps a Ethernet Gremlin lived on the board until power was fully removed from the device…
