at the moment I have one HD installed and clean. ready to load files, I was told to have all bays loaded first if not I would have to back up all files from first hd. forgot reason why. is this true? I am ready to start loading HD, will I need to do any procedure later on? or no worries?
It really depends on your intent with this device. Do you want data protection where everything you copy to one disk is duplicated automatically to the other(raid1)? do you want performance(raid0)? both(raid5)? or you just want a big storage where you can keep adding disks but without any redundancy? (JBOD)
If you choose any raid, all the disks need to me erased first. For this reason, you will need to do a backup.

Thank you. New question: Just loaded new 8tb on my wd4100. A red light shows on bay. Do i have to format the drive or other procedure? If so what are the steps. Thank you in advance.
