Power blinks orange, disc blinks blue, nothing, repeat

Hi,

Had my My Cloud EX2 for a long time now with no issues. Found it today repeatedly booting. First the power light blinks orange, fan starts, disk 1 blinks blue, then silence, then it tries again repeatedly until I remove the power.

I’ve tried removing disc 2 - exactly the same
I’ve tried removing disc 1 - there is a delay before disc 2 light starts blinking but the same outcome
I’ve tried starting with no discs - log in screen states “Power was lost from the system. Performing file system consistency check. Please wait.”

Any ideas whats going on and what i can do about it?

Further news - I tried a reset and started the EX2 without drives. It booted, asked what language i wanted to use and then said to insert drives before setup could be completed. I inserted the drives and it switched off

Its got me thinking this could be a power issue. You could cook an egg on the adaptor when i unplugged it from its repeated boot cycle. I can’t find an identical power adaptor around the house but have tried a universal adaptor with lower power rating. With that plugged in the device boots but both HDD lights show red. At no point do the fans start or the drives spin. There is a flicker of the HDD lights at times. Going back to the regular power adaptor I notice the light on it dips and goes out at the same time the EX2 goes off and tries to reboot. I’ve got another power adaptor on it way with Amazon Prime so i’ll find out tomorrow

Keep us posted!

So, the new power adaptor arrived from Amazon and i’d mis-measured the connector. Its not the standard 5.5 x 2.1mm on all adaptors. I ordered a set of barrel plugs which arrived today and covert the adaptor I bought from 5.5 x 2.1mm to 5.5 x 2.5mm.

I plugged this in and the EX2 started immediately, booted and has run for about an hour since. The new power adaptor has barely warmed despite the EX2 reindexing everything so the old power supply must have been dodgy. Wish I hadn’t done the reset but SO much better having a failed drive

Interesting. Was the original power supply definitely OEM (did you buy the drive new)? My OEM power supply was 12v 3A but I’ve seen a lot of people selling 2 A and 1.5A supplies for these drives.

I didn’t buy it new but the power adaptor didn’t look like a knock off - it looked fairly similar to one I have on a my cloud 2tb single drive NAS. It was 12v 3A and has worked fine for a couple of years. Looking on eBay at photos users have posted of brand new EX2 it doesnt match any of them so I assume it was not OEM.

I’ve have the my cloud with a single drive which I’ve had from new. That’s got a 12v 1.5A. And the first thing I did once everything was up and running was take a back on a USB drive I’ve had from new - again 1.5A. I assume you need 1.5A per drive so anything under isn’t going to run your EX2 at all, and if it does not for very long

Who knows what would have happened if I hadn’t noticed the drive failing. The power adaptor was almost untouchable it was so hot
