Possible to view smartview backup without Smartview?

Is there way to view files that were backed up by Smartware without using Smartware? My ‘My Book Essential’ was fried by lightning. We removed the hard drive, put it in a different enclosure and were able to recover files from it but they are are in GZ format. I tried 7zip but to no avail. Am I out of luck here?

Depending on the enclosure you may only get encrypted data. Drives with Smartware and are hardware encrypted by a circuit board. The boards are not readily interchangable either.
