Can anyone comment on the performance I’m seeing with one of these new units. I have the 16TB. I won’t be using it in RAID 0, I will be using it in RAID 1.
Copying a roughly 3GB Windows Server ISO image file to and from it, I’m seeing the following:
RAID 0:
ISO onto WD: 1:14 (avg, 40 - 42 MB/s)
ISO from WD to Desktop: 1:11 (avg 42 - 43 MB/s)
RAID 1:
ISO onto WD: 0:43 (avg, 70 MB/s)
ISO from WD to Desktop: 0:40 (avg, 73 MB/s)
Have tested this many times. The only difference to the figures above in other tests I have done is that if I copy a 6GB ISO, the write times in RAID 1 increase to around 95 MB/s, and the read times around 90 MB/s but the RAID 0 performance is the same as stated above.
Have tested this in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, 2 different PCs, both USB 3 ports, performance is almost identical on both.
Why is RAID 1 outperforming RAID 0?? This is not normal, especially for writes.
I’d recommend testing the hard drive using WD Drive Utilities in order to verify if the unit is healthy. If it passes all tests I’d recommend double-checking your system’s dedicated USB 3.0 drivers and UASP Mode controller for an update since there seems to be a bottleneck.
Thanks for your response. I’ve already done all the WD Drive Utilities tests, just done them again today and all passed (I haven’t been able to do the Complete Drive Test again as that took overnight last time, but it was fine and that kind of test should not pick up any problems that would be relevant to the symptoms I’m seeing anyway, as far as I understand).
Have checked your link to benchmarking, the vast majority of that information is not relevant to this device.
I am looking into the USB 3 drives and UASP mode now, but I would be surprised if this would be an issue as I have tested this on 2 PCs, both with modern operating systems, one of them Windows 10 with all latest drivers and updates on a new Lenovo system that is only a few months old. Will get back to you after doing this though.
