PC HDD Failure

My Cloud active for over 5-years. PC HDD crashed & repl with SSD. I do not understand the steps required to reinstall Smartware on the new SDD and recover the Smartware backup on the WD MyCloud. I assume these are synced files, but I only heard of this term on this site.

I was able to see the Dashboard and I see an assignment for Smartware. But What the Hell do I do with it? Personal Mucic Files are intact for users, but my concern is recovering the Smartware backup. I see where I should create a Safepoint - non exisist. That would require at least a 1TB backup connected via USB inserted into MyCloud. That s about as much as I grasp.

At a loss …Haus

@Haus You should be able to download SmartWare here.

Once it is downloaded you should be able to install it.

To recover your backups use the SmartWare Retrieve tab. If you have problems check out the Help tab, Retrieve.

Thanks . Will key that in. If that is a user sign in site, I will be refused entrance. “INACTIVE OWNER or USER .ORG. ID 00DU0000000JPN7

Really sick now.

The very basic/general steps are as follows:

  1. Install Windows to the SSD drive and install all Windows updates.
  2. Make sure SMB 1.0 is enabled in Windows (https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=20736). (Microsoft may disable SMB1.0 in new installs or via Windows Updates)
  3. Download and install Smartware (but do not run a Smartware backup): https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=259&lang=en
  4. See the Smartware User Manual (http://products.wdc.com/library/?id=244&type=25&cn=4779-705057) for information on how to restore Smartware backed up files.

In particular see Chapter 6 Retrieving Files in the Smartware User Manual: http://products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-705057.pdf#page=53

Note that depending on how you had Smartware configured to backup the now dead drive you may need to reinstall your software/applications as well.

I’m not sure of what you are talking about here. If you own the My Cloud and have been using SmartWare to back up your computers/devices then you should not have a problem retrieving your files.

WD Sync is different from your backups made by SmartWare. I have all my information backed up on my original My Cloud by SmartWare. I also have my desktop backed up on my second My Cloud by SmartWare and some files are synced to this My Cloud by WD Sync that results in them being synced on both my desktop and laptop. See example images below for Cloud Access devices and then my shares.

First, I did not move my Operating System to Win 10; I made use of my Win 7 Recovery Disk. So, SMB 1.0 is apparently functioning since I can see WDMyCloud on my computer network. And cat0w, I suspect the unfriendly response from WD [INACTIVE OWNER or USER .ORG. ID 00DU0000000JPN7] when I attempt to log, might be linked to a warranty exchange, not indirect access from a company IP. I am working on my own computer and just a single WDMyCloud.

Secondly, I must apologize for the followup delay. Really not feeling well over the past several days.

Tonight I end my quest (3/23 @ 11:55pm) by failing to follow suggested Setup successfully. Not give an opportunity to enter the Device Name or the IP and My Blue light has been dark forever. Chronic complaint, so I read a couple years ago. Really not brave enough to do a 40 second reset.

So, I downloaded Smartware into my computer successfully. Tomorrow I see what I can do with it.
