PC doesn't recognize MB Essential as a hard drive

My MYBOOK ESSENTIAL (WDBACW0030BK-01) is not recognized by my PC (WIN8) as a hard drive.  I have downloaded the updated drivers, plugged it directly into a wall outlet, changed the USB cable all to no avail.  My Windows File Explorer sees it as a CD-ROM and will not read.  Troubleshooting via Windows 8 says it is “not accessible” - “because of an I/O error”.  I am perplexed - can anyone help, please ?

Hello. I have also this problem. I have windows 7 and 8 before last reinstall. Now i have Win 8 Pro. After last reinstall of windows i want plug usb cable from MyBook to PC and it fails. But on Device manager i can see My Book  but in My computer folder dont. Windows cant load information about MyBook. Only as Storage (J:). And Windows cantz show how much space of MyBook is used and how much is free.

I try open MyBook in linux version Knoppix and 2 times its open, my files working. But now i have only error message (screenshot).
