Passport Drive Firmware Update issues

I have a brand new Passport Essentials 500gb drive for which I am trying to up date the firmware. I’m running Windows 7 in Safe Mode and with no other USB connections in use. So far it has been going for over 6 hours. I feel this can’t possibly be right. I am hesitant to terminate the process in case I damage the drive irreparably. Any advice or suggestions to help me out of this? Otherwise I will have to try and reformat the drive with some other (non WD.) application.

Before I attempted to update the firmware, I had run the Smartware backup, which also took hours and kept using 98-100% resources. Not very impressed with that either. Swift replies gratefully received. Thanks.

Did you get the firmware updated?  If not, maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.

Yes I did. Can’t remember now what finally did it, but after removing the viertual CD part and reformatting the drive, the update was successful. Thank you for your reply.

Excellent.  Glad to hear it.
