On and off....drive unproperly ejected

Recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. My WD external drive sometimes comes on and sometimes it does not. When it comes on and I try to open the files in Finder it gives me a message that the drive was unproperly ejected . Any ideas on how at least on how to recover the data.? Thanks
