Old, simple P2P

I knew I shouldn’t give WD any credit… I eventually decided to install Os5 but, the big surprise, there is no longer the built-in P2P app.
Actually, there is no app.
Why should I install a 3rd party P2P client like Transmission? I like Transmission, but it was so easy to use the built-in P2P feature before.
And where is the web access to my files?
That’s really great!

If one uses (the forum search feature and searched this OS5 subforum for Transmission they’d see the following post/thread that explains how to possibly compile and install it on a single bay/single drive second gen My Cloud running OS5.

Fact is however that WD decided to limit what apps could be officially installed to the second gen single bay My Cloud. For multi bay models one may have to use the manual install method.

My Cloud OS5: 3rd Party Apps Matrix

My Cloud OS 5: Download and Install 3rd Party Apps Manually

I did not want a 3rd party application, I wanted the simple P2P feature!
And, by the way, this ridiculous OS5 does not have the obvious feature to access files by a webif!
Never again this low cost brand: WD, you are indecent.

Then downgrade back to OS3 if you can on your My Cloud device if you want to regain the options the OS3 firmware had.

Or use a docker version of eMule. See the following thread:

Or see if you can use the example method for compiling Transmission mentioned above for compiling aMule from the aMule app download link for your device. Example link for an EX2 Ultra: https://downloads.wdc.com/gpl/WDMyCloud_NAS_Apps_GPL_20150731.tar.gz

Or compile and use Transmission per method detailed above. Or wait for someone (or you) to figure out how to compile an aMule app for use on OS5 outside of Docker.

Point is you have options. None are optimal, or what you want. But they are options. It ■■■■■ that WD removed some features in OS5 that were in OS3. Not the first time they’ve done something like this. They changed/removed a few features and options that are found on the first gen single bay My Cloud v4.x firmware when they introduced the second gen single bay My Cloud and it’s v2.x firmware.

You keep answering at random: who talked about amule?
And, above all, I’ll surely downgrade to OS3 if it was possible but it’s not, along with the warning OS5 itself gives before the upgrade.
Aren’t you aware of that, before answering nonsense?

When digging through the; WD Support site, the multi bay My Cloud support sites, and multi bay My Cloud related to P2P apps, the aMule program was one of the links that came up with respect to P2P programs. So I posted it.

Look as a fellow My Cloud user I’m just throwing out options and suggestions because you likely won’t get any suggestions from WD. This is mostly a user to user support forum, it is not often WD staff provide help for anything beyond the basic issues. Your post sat here for 5 days now with no other responses from others including no response WD. A similar post elsewhere asking about the loss of P2P had others indicated using Transmission.

When that suggestion was made, you state that you don’t want a 3rd party application. Other suggestions for other P2P programs are likewise made you again state you don’t want to use those options either. If you refuse to use a third party app to replace a feature in OS3 that WD removed from OS5, then your options apparently are rather limited. Live with OS5 and no P2P app. Downgrade to OS3. Or buy a different NAS device or build your own. Shrugs.

In any event, good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I know how a forum works: I’m a senior member in a different kind of technical forum.
OK: as, if you say, is possible to downgrade (I believe it’s not, but you did not answer to that) do you know how?

WD appears to claim one cannot officially downgrade back to OS3 (buried in this OS5 announcement link). Unofficially, like so many things on the My Cloud, it appears one can do so. One person in the OS3 single bay My Cloud subforum indicates they were able to roll back to OS3 but didnt’ give detailed instructions of how to do so. Other examples for multi bay units below.

With out knowing exactly what My Cloud model you are using it is unknown how one would roll back such a model easily; or if it is possible at all which is something I did indicate in prior posts. More on how to possibly roll back multi bay models below. On the second gen single bay My Cloud models, because the firmware is stored on the hard drive it can be replaced with an earlier version through various different “unbrick” methods. Obviously one would have to backup their user data before performing such a drastic measure. Depending on what method is used one may be repartitioning and reformatting the various partitions used by the firmware including the user data partition.

User Fox_exe has a set of directions for installing OS3 firmware to the second gen single bay My Cloud hard drive that can be done using Telnet and a USB flash drive:

User Fox_exe repositories:
Main Repository: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/
Second Gen: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/

Second gen directions:
English: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/_Unbricking_en.txt
Russian: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/_Unbricking_ru.txt
usbrecovery.tar.gz: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/usbrecovery.tar.gz
Alternate method files:
uImage-wdrecovery: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/Developing/uImage-wdrecovery
uRamdisk-wdrecovery: https://fox-exe.ru/WDMyCloud/WDMyCloud-Gen2/Developing/uRamdisk-wdrecovery
Latest second gen firmware: http://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?g=904

It is possible one may be able to skip the portion of those directions that recreate the various partitions and use just the portion of the directions on pushing the two files (uImage-wdrecovery and uRamdisk-wdrecovery) to their respective locations detailed in those directions. Boot the second gen single bay unit into safe mode, then install the downloaded OS3 firmware to the unit.

For multi bay My Cloud models one may have to search through the OS5 subforum for that model, or possibly that model’s OS3 subforum, to see if there is a specific method or set of directions on how to reinstall the OS3 firmware on that model. Some other threads for other OS5 multi bay units where people have, apparently, been able to roll back to OS3.

For the non technically inclined, rolling back the firmware may involve the user having some knowledge of; Linux, Linux commands, SSH, Telnet or other technical methods and commands. If one is unfamiliar with how to do something outlined in the various links above, they may have to do some learning and internet searching to understand what they are doing.

As always proceed at your own risk and backup data before hand!

You don’t have to believe him. I have done it.

This is my over view.

You basically need telnet and a usb drive.

You put the recovery software on the usb. Plug it into the drive. Telenet in. Tell it to recover. Unplug everything. Go to your normal web browser and upload the new firmware. Reset the user/email. And it will be OS3 with all your data.

He has posted the links I’ve followed but I can get more detailed if needed.
