Normal working temperature of portable harddrive

Hey Guys !

I just want to know what is the safe operating temperature of WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB Harddrive … It goes from 31 degree celsius during bootup to 45 degree celsius in quite a short time during normal usage of backing up files in the drive…

Hello there, that temperature seems about right for the hard drives. You basically needs to be checking your in room temperature.  http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/AAG/ENG/4178-705717.pdf

Even though this topic is 3 years old, I would like to ask whether it is safe or not to allow the external HD past 45°C without affecting its shelf life?

You see, I was defraging my “My Passport 0741” and the temp rose to 48°C, and its going to stay that way for about an 3 hours until the de-fragmentation is done. So I’m kind of worried as I already have this unit for almost 5 years now and I don’t want to have to replace it nor lose the data stored by mistake, by shortening its life span.

Thank you in advance to whomever answers this query!!!
