Newbie Questions USB Transfer and Sync Question

I just purchased the Live TV Hub and I am loving it, so far.

My questions are. 

Can we use a USB data transfer (driver less) cable to plug a pc and the hub?  I transfered a few movies and music files from pc to hub via LAN but it is ssssssooooooooo slow.  This could be a great solution, IMHO, to the transfer issue. 

Next question:  Someone already asked but I have not seen an answer.  If we sync an external drive to transfer movies to the hub and we then delete the files from the external drive and reload it, when we try to re-sync the new files will the old ones get deleted from the hub?

For the first part, no; you can’t transfer files to the Hub via a direct USB connection.

Yes, the LAN connection can be very slow.  Transferring from PC to an external drive first and copying the files from that to the Hub may be faster.

Not sure about the Sync question… someone else will have to chime in on that.  :)

If I understand this correctly, I can transfer files to the external drive and then copy them to the hub without syncing?

Yes, you don’t need to sync to transfer files from USB flash drives or External HDDs to the Hub.  :)

I guess I need to do some more reading on how to transfer files this way, since I only remember about wireless and wired transfers.

Sorry for not being specific enough, it was late at night when I replied and I didn’t have time to double-check the method.  :)

Here’s how you go about doing it:

1. Copy your media from your PC to the External HDD.
2. Plug the External HDD into the Hub
3. Let it do its media library scan.
4. When it offers to Sync, press Cancel.
5. Go to the Files tab.
6. Press the Red / Source button and select Local Storage , then your External HDD.
7. Navigate to the Folder / Files you want to transfer.
8. Press Options on the remote.  Select Copy.
9. Navigate to the location on the Hub you want to Copy to.
10. OK the selection and the files will copy over.

i think that sync will keep the old files, which i think is the right

so if you accidentally delete files from the main source you wont lose them…

but im not sure…

hello…a Newbie here…

I just want to ask whats the difference between a SYNC and your method above to transfer files from an external HDD to the Hub?

from what I gather, the Sync is a one-touch feature to transfer ALL files on a external HDD to the Hub whereas the steps you have listed above is for CHOOSING some files that you want transferred to the hub.

Is this correct?

Remember that when you sync your files, you are basically coping all the data from one drive to the WD TV Live Hub internal drive, using the method describe by PixelPowe, you can select what to copy to the WD TV Live Hub. So basically, yes you are correct.

since transferring via the Network is toooo slow, i’ll be using the external HDD to transfer files to my WDTV hub. i have an extra external HDD dedicated for this task and it will only contain movies, music or pics.so SYNC will be the best OPTION.

one more question: when i SYNC my eHDD with different set of movies from the first sync to the Hub , will it delete the movies i first copied to the hub? or once a movie is inside the HD of the hub, it cannot anymore be deleted thru sync, you have to manually use the UI of the hub to delete a file. Syncing will NOT DELETE any file on the Hub. Correct?

The sync option is only for copy files, once the files are copied to the WD TV Live Hub internal drive, the only way to delete them, is manually. Doing multiple syncing will not delete any data from your WD TV Live Hub drive.

So, will WD TV Live Hub stop syncing when the internal HDD is full?

Well, good question, in theory, it should, but I have not encounter this situation…once again, it should.

I double checked last night. I saw data of USB HDD in WDLive Hub even though I removed the USB HDD. It syncs that means it copies all data from USB HDD to internal HDD. I don’t want to do that so I deleted the duplicated data (Sync_USB) in internal HDD.
