I agree, the easiest fix here would be to just open it so that users can manually update the Plex version (as long as it’s supported). This way people wont continue to run into this issue.
- Over the last 7 years, where were you going to get a 4TB hard disk for $100? basically getting the NAS hardware for free?
- MCH runs a Plex Media Sever, just not the latest version, just as iPhone5, 6, 7, 8 runs iOS, just not the latest version.
A few of you are here for a whole of 15 minutes and you want Western Digital to open up their OS4 for you to hack, an OS which is the basis for their security that has prevented MCH from remote hacking for the last 7+ years. If you are a competent hacker, you would just physically hack the MCH yourself and install the OS that you want on your own, you don’t need to ask WD for anything.
While you are at it, why don’t you go ask Plex where they stashed the PMS binary for MCH, a device that is more than 7 years old? They will refer you to their advisement on the limitation of NAS as PMS
Plex Media Server for NAS devices
Limitations of NAS
While NAS are becoming more common in homes by offering an inexpensive way of storing media files with redundancy options built-in, most also have limitations when compared to a stand-alone computer.
Processor Power
By far the biggest limitation with most NAS is processor-based. Very few NAS contain powerful processors, which can have a significant impact on your experience using Plex.
@NoPlex you are so needlessly rude and antagonistic for no reason whatsoever. Are you Western Digital’s defence attorney or something? No one is asking them to open up the device beyond allowing a manual update check for Plex software.
Are you serious? You are here 15 minutes and called me rude and my answers BS excuses and I gave every question a thorough explanation and resources to fix the problems which is about 100% more than most of you deserve and you are calling me rude?
You can’t be serious!!!
It is not possible to install the Plex Media Server without administrator privilege which is not given to any user or owner of the MCH. You should ask these questions on the plex tv forum, which is where they belong.
So This is true? No one with MCH is able to access Plex Media Server anymore? plex stoped working here about a week ago.
It’s still working for me on devices I didn’t update on and turned off automatic updates. But yes, if your app updated (especially on iOS devices) it no longer works as it requires a newer version of the server which Western Digital would need to update on the device.
Been using two MCH devices happily with Plex since around 2019? I realise of course that these devices are old, and had even been thinking about replacing them in due course. However, to simply send out a new app update that breaks what must amount to a decent chunk of PMS servers, without even an email to warn people (but they’re always keen to email to say they’re increasing fees), is frankly bad business.
Thanks for sharing.
That would be awesome! If they fix it in a timely manner, they may keep this customer.
Hope WD team listen to our thoughts and concerns as we are MHC - Plex users and we still need to keep using it not to go to the easy way to replace with another NAS.
Wish to hear good news soon from WD experts to resolve and update PMS on the MCH so we can use our Plex server normal and as usual.
I agree. I also think an update for this should make it to continue to work for the foreseeable future because this was a major update to Plex that changed the entire app on multiple devices. It’s a big rollout for them.
This has now been fixed, the My Cloud Home has the updated version of Plex and it works perfectly on the new iPadOS app again. I’m honestly impressed at the response time here.
If only they had announced it would get updated. There would have been a lot less worried customers.
But very happy they fixed it and indeed in a timely manner.
I m happy for you guys Here it is still not working. Plex won‘t connect to MCH anymore. Too bad
