New Plex App requires 1.41.2

Just noticed updated Plex App in iOS store which requires Plex 1.41.2. Knew this was coming as saw beta details.

Do we know if or when MyCloud home will be updated. Currently on 1.40.4.

Missed reading the notes :-/ and now I’m trying to figure out how downgrade my iOS Plex app so I can reconnect to my WD MyCloud Home Plex Install

I, too, request the upgrade of the plex server to version 1.41.2

Hi,

I updated the application this morning like an ■■■■■. Is there any chance of a Plex server update in the near future?

Me too - updated - not knowing min spec has changed!! So annoying that they give NO warning and no way back on iOS (hopefully get older app back from my iPad..)

Western Digital has never updated third party software in a timely manner even when the My Cloud series was new, so WD is unlikely to give quick update of a third party software now that the My Cloud Home (MCH) is more than 7 years old and near its end of Life (EOL).

  1. WD does not support third party software such as Plex beyond making one version available for installation. WD Tech only validates Plex MS builds that is made available by Plex and has no access to the code base for PMS or any other 3rd party software.
  2. WD considers 3rd party apps as supported by the app vendor, WD requests you to contact Plex Media Server to check for updates.
  3. WD and Plex could allow hundreds of versions of PMS to lapse before making another version avaiable.
  4. WD has just disabled Google Photos support on the MCH yesterday, Mar 31, 2025 and any other features such as Plex could disappear from MCH in a matter of one month as we’ve seen of Google Photos.

What the WD community saw in 2021:

Hi,

I have the same problem as everyone else but I am quite new to MCH so I am a bit shocked that the Plex server probably isn’t going to be updated in a timely manner.

It seems to me that a suitable update is available here:

but I cant find a way to do a manual install.

Is this correct? WD won’t provide a timely update, nor do they give us a way to do a manual install ourselves ?

That’s disappointing to the point of asking for my money back

Unfortunately it’s not that simple - update can only come through WD…
I’m using this link to get the last copy of the Working Plex app back for my iOS -

Alternatively - if your iOS app has been updated. You can still login through Plex on your browser (and then Save to Home Screen) to make an useable app alternative..

Thanks for the link and suggestion.

I have a couple of Android devices that had the app automatically updated and there was the same problem regarding the out of date server. But the weird thing is , in trying to solve the problem I uninstalled the app, then noticed Google Play is delivering the older February version. Reinstalled the app and all is good again. Turned off auto update!
Not sure if I was inadvertently signed up to the beta version or if Google play has pulled the latest version.
Anyway all is good again.

Id read that they rolled-back Plex on android - that’s great! I managed to get the older app for my iOS devices yesterday - so Im also all sorted. ive also hopefully managed to block auto updates on my Roku sticks etc as well, just in case they do the same..

Is there any way to update the app plex into the mycloud? I have the bin from the plex.tv but i Don’t have idea the how to update, any manual??

You don’t seem to be aware that you are buying a 7 year old device even if it is ‘new’. If you say you have a iPhone 5 new in the box, would you expect that iPhone5 to be updated in a timely manner, if at all in 2025?

You are confusing the ‘My Cloud’ with the ‘My Cloud Home’. The two have completely different hardware and software as the ‘Home’ devices have never been OPENED to installation of third party software outside of the 'DO MORE’ feature on the web or mobile app.

Please don’t devolve this thread into another jumbled confusion of ‘My Cloud’ vs ‘My Cloud Home’ (MCH). The MCH is not opened to user installation of third party apps. There are has never been any PMS (Plex Media Server) binary available for the MCH on plex.tv.

If you are asking a My Cloud question, you should avail yourself of the OS5 subforum, it only takes a few seconds to find it.

Having this issue as well on my iPad, which updated itself to the newest version of the app. I’ve since turned off automatic updates, including on my Apple TV before it happens there as well (since it’s where I use Plex the most).

This has demonstrated to me one of the biggest flaws of the My Cloud Home, since you’re unable to manually update the version yourself and are entirely reliant on them to do it. This was a pretty big change to the Plex app so I’m hopeful if they do eventually update it will fix it for the foreseeable future.

@NoPlex above, there’s no reason to be so antagonistic to people asking for help. The My Cloud Home is still sold in stores and is supposed to continue getting software updates until the end of 2027. It’s reasonable for people to wonder if an update to something that broke a core feature will be pushed out sometime soon. Using the MCH for Plex is a pretty big selling point of the device.

I’m on Android and mine is asking for the new server as well. Doesn’t seem to be rolled back to me.
If WD doesn’t fix this fast, this will be the last WD products I have bought. I’ll vote with my money. Payed for the lifetime on Plex and for an 8tb home server to create my own library. Both will be useless this way.
Not a brand I’m gonna invest in this way.

How did you manage to get the older app? I tried to find it and found links only to the latest. Thanks a lot.

  1. If you are having so much problem running Plex, you should consider reading the community forum on plex.tv
  2. Consider running the Plex Media Server (PMS) on something else, any used $50 small form factor Intel (SFF) PC such as the HP 800 G3 or higher Elitedesk can run rings around a 7 year old ARM cpu on the MCH and won’t cost any more to run if done properly.
  3. Nearly every Plex player Android apk is freely released with its release notes by Plex, such as
Plex for Android - #525 by PlexAndroidReleaser - Announcements - Plex Forum

I don’t buy an expensive Nas for a primary use as a Plex server, just to have to buy something else to run as a Plex server because WD isn’t doing their job.
If they want to be in control of the 3rd party apps, they should keep it up to date. The devices are expensive enough.

I understand you may be from a different background, but

  1. The MCH is a 7 year old device near its End of Life
  2. The MCH has always been a closed OS, never opened.
  3. The MCH is the cheapest NAS type device that could run Plex MS, to call it expensive would be disingenuous because it had often been ~ US $100 (4TB). If you paid too much, you didn’t know what you were doing.

Bs excuses. It might not be expensive for you, but it is for a lot of us. And again, they advertised with it being able to be used as a Plex server. If they want to be in control of the app updates, fine, but do you job. Or just make it open for the end users to be able to update it themselves.
