New life for my NAS?

Hello. i found in my attic my old WD_My_Cloud single bay 3TB

i have seen the security message that Internet access should be prohibited and i have blocked it from my firewall. So it is only local.
is there a way to get a 2nd life for this device with another image, custom or not?
Any other ways?

Mine is set up for home use only on my home network. It has no internet access. It is still connected to my router. The address has been made static. It works fine.

Not sure I understand the question. If you are asking will the first generation single bay My Cloud (OS3 v4.x firmware) will work on a local network, the answer is yes even when you block internet access to the unit. Your local network clients will be able to access it. A number of us still run first gen v4.x firmware single bay My Cloud’s on our local network for various reasons. There are various methods of remote access, like VPN, one can setup on their own to gain remote access to their old My Cloud units that no longer support WD’s methods of remote access.

If you are asking if you can install OS5 (v5.x firmware) on it, the answer is no. If you want to install different firmware the the unit the answer is, that is not officially supported. There have been various attempts, with mixed success, installing alternate operating systems to a single bay My Cloud. Start digging through the following old threads if you are interested.
