New Hard Drive Dying? Pls help confirm

G’day all!

Grateful for some help from the Community to confirm that I have problems with my internal hard drive.

I just installed a new WD Red 3TB drive into my microserver (Fedora 27 / Amahi) to use as a back-up destination target. I was running initial backups overnight and woke up this morning to find SMART errors suggesting that failure of the drive is imminent.

However, when I run the smartmontools short offline self-test, the tool comes back and says "Completed without error:

In case this has anything to do with it, the overnight backup run failed due to a power failure sometime in the night, but the server successfully restarted once power was restored and was running when I check it in the morning.

The drive has less than 5 days run life. Before I go down the warranty replacement path, I would be grateful if knowledgeable users in the community could review the SMART report information below to confirm that I have a problem and should seek warranty replacement or suggest further diagnostic tests.

Thanks for your help!
Carl

Hi: Carl

You might want to give this a try.

at Internal Drives, SSDs & Embedded Flash
Select your hard drive and download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (current version 5.27)

Follow the instructions to create a bootable USB.

Turn off you computer and remove the sata power connector from all the hard drives.
Connect the hard drive that you think may be defective or want to test.
Turn on the computer.
Set your bios to boot from a USB device.
Type dosdlg.exe

Select WRITE ZEROS TO DRIVE and do a full erase.

It should take about 2 to 2.5 hrs per terabyte depending on the computer.

It not only erases the hard drive but it also checks to see if it is working properly.

if the drive is defective it will come back with an error code that WD support wants for a RMA.
