New 3 TB will not play video files

I purchased a My Book 3 TB external hard drive for my video collection.  I copied the files to the hard drive but they would not play on Windows Media Player.  I went through all the diagnostics, write zeros, initialized the disk and formatted.  When complete I only had 2 TB space formatted, I lost 1 TB.  It would not initialized or format, i tried a couple of times.  I sent it back on RMA and just received a new drive. I tried the video files again and they would not play.  It actually locks up Windows Media Player.  I downloaded VLC and I’m able to play the videos.

My question is, why doesn’t Windows Media Player play the video files?

Hi, when you try to play the same video files from the internal PC hard drive, do they play fine? I could be that WMP is not compatible with the video files you are trying to play. Also to access the 3TB capacity in one partition you have to use GPT mode instead of MBR when you initialize the my book.

I am able to play from my internal drive and 2 smaller external drives without a problem.  It is just off the My Book 3 TB external drive that will not play teh .VOB and .IFO files.  The play fine using VLC from all drives.
