Netflix is gone since I updated Firmwaire to 3.03.13

Whoa…to think I almost upgraded - is Netflix just flat gone for users in the US?

No, not at all.

Except for the guy up there in Michigan, no-one in the US has reported losing NetFlix.

It’s only people who live in countries in which NetFlix isn’t supported with WD.

I’m the guy in Michigan.  I was able to revert back to the prior firmware to get my services back.  I still do not understand why it happened though.

Wondering for those who using WDLiveHub outside US and who had Netflix earlier before 3.03.13 upgrade,

were you able to get any of Netflix services at all?

I thought Netflix themselves would block non-US IPs anyway regardless of whether you’ve that Netflix apps or not on your WDLive menu.

This is not right for Puerto Rico subscriber because the services is available throught Playstation, wii or a simply tv with internet apps and I hace this great device and doesn’t work for it, that’s not right they should fix that soom or their are going to loose clients.

Hi, I’m living in the Netherlands and have US device. I’ve just updated the firmware to the latest version 3.03.16 (using a US proxy, I don’t know if that may had any influence but I did it just to be sure). Now I’m using a DNS service from unblock-us.com (important: without the proxy!) and netflix is working fine. So I’m really wondering if you have a firmware related issue. Maybe it helps you if you repeat my steps… Anyway, good luck!

Also note that WD Hubs sold outside the US do not have the proper DRM chips for

Netflix. This is stupid as I get Netflix outside the US using AppleTV which is the same

DRM chip worldwide.

(unblock-us)

And where the **bleep** is BBC IPlayer WD ??? it’s months since it’s out on other devices…

Thank you all for contributing to me eventually figuring out how to get Netflix back om mu Hub

Yesterday I upgraded to the new Firmware and I am having the same problem with Netflix being gone. I will try the parental control-thing. Other than that I really do not know what I can do other than rolling back (Three firmwares by now).

Just to answer some of the questions about my setup: My Hub is from the US and has worked with Netflix no problem until the 3.03.13 firmware (or newer). I use us-unblock to get a US DNS.

Hopefully, someone will know what to do.

Thanks again!

Kasper.

Hi Kaspar, I have an us unit and I am experiencing your same issue. No netflix with latest firmware version although perfoming the following option:

-reset factory settings

-set timezone to US

-disconnect network

-install firmware from USB

I am curious to know if somebody can share some lights on how the geographic location is determined in the situation above.

Regards,

Federico

Hi Federico.

Thank you for your message. I have also done everything possible and the only solution so far seems to be to roll back the firmware to a version earlier than 3.03.13. I am also thinking of ending my Netflix subscription since it **bleep** not being able to update your device.

I am also hoping for a solution soon and have asked WD directly.

Its likely that services are not shown until the internet location is confirmed and not the other way round.

Hi Rick, thanks for confirming the suspect about geolocatization detection sequence.

I could enable Netflix and other US streaming services on my american WD TV LIve hub using latest firmware with unblock-us by following this procedure:

  1. Update firmware using either automatic download servide or by USB

2)Unplug unit from internet ! Very important

  1. Reset to factory settings by  Setup → System → Device Reset → All Settings Back to Factory Default

  2. Manually provide IP configuration (address, netmask, gateway) and unblock DNS

  3. Plug unit to internet and check internet configuration

  4. Voila! You should be able to see a new Label ‘Live TV’ (which contains Skitter.tv) + all US-based services

Regards,

Fred

Hi Fred.

I tried to follow the steps you listed and even though I did as you described I still do not have access to Netflix and the other US-only apps.

So I guess it’s back to the good old firmware again.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Kasper.

Kasper, I am sorry to read that technique didn’t work for you. Just my 2 cents:

-did you check that unblock-us service was available to your network and WD unit never connected to internet using your default DNS?

Before applying the technique above, I discovered that it’s possible to preserve Netflix (and other US service apps) across firmware upgrade. It was sufficient to mark it as ‘favourite’ when running with old firmware. After the upgrade, the app will be still accessible from favourite menu although it’s not listed into Services menu.

Hope this helps!

Fred

Hi again Fred.

I am so happy to tell you that I did get Netflix and the other American apps to show up on the new firmware

I simply installed the old firmware again and then followed the steps you mentioned, paying extra attention to when I should unplug the ethernet cable (RIGHT AFTER the new firmware is downloaded and BEFORE it installs). At least that is what I think made the difference.

I guess an advice for people experiencing the same problem would be to download the new firmware onto a usb-stick, unplug the ethernet cable from the Hub while installing from the stick and plugging it back in after having set up network settings manually.

Thank you so much for this fix. Tonight I am going to really enjoy watching Netflix on my Hub again!

Kasper.
