Netflix in the UK?

Same situation…   WD TV Live Hub with the built in hard drive and netflix not showing in the online services menu -although about 22 other services are. Think it needs to be added in to the firmware like the rest appeared when the firmware updated?

Netflix still showing for US, Canada and Brazil only but surely thats just because it wasn’t available in the uk before yesterday.

Not moaning here… I don’t know how much i’d use it but would be good for the rest of the family to use it through wdtvlive hub without me having to give up my xbox

Hi

I read somewhere that the UK Live hub doesn’t have DRM for streaming Netflix. I have no idea if this is true but I have emailed Western Digital for clarification.

Here’s an interesting article that is doing the rounds on the tech-blogs:

WDTV Live firmware update for Netflix

Here’s the notable bits:

‘Following this week’s launch of Netflix in the UK and Ireland, Western Digital today announced support for the service alongside the BBC’s iPlayer video on demand service via a software update for the WDTV Live digital media player.’

Wouldn’t it have been nice for WDC to have put this press-release notification on this very forum, informing all their loyal users about the Netflix update?

SIgh.

That would be crazy - why would they create two (or more) hardware versions? The cost of manufacturing would be a showstopper. Obviously firmware region control is the key and thankfully it appears that WDC has announced an update.

Sounds like good news if i’m not misinterperating the last several posts.

Am I correct in thinking that I’ll soon be able to stream netflix uk through my wdtv hd live hub through an update that western digital tech announced? In one topic I’m reading it can’t be done and in this an update through firmware is possible. Some clarification on this would be nice I’m using this box http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=570

Thanks if someone can confirm that a firmware update which is coming will allow me to stream netflix uk.

You mean like this?

That’s excellent. To be fair, that was only posted 2 hours ago though, so you can see where the confusion comes in.

This however does seem to be just for the WDTV Live, as the LIve Hub doesn’t appear to have a firmware update listed - that’s very annoying :frowning:

My daughter’s WDTV Live Streaming now has BBC iPlayer and Netflix, but my hub still has nothing. The hub had best  see a similar update within days…

Edit: And I really like the BBC iPlayer implementation. I tested some HD content, and it streamed perfectly and looked great. I NEED this on my hub (Netflix, not so much).

The press release linked above makes no mention of the Hub.

They will possibly update it, but there’s no news of it…

Looks like its not supported as of this moment…

That’s rather unfair, especially since the Live Hub page has the little netflix sticker on it.

I’d be quite upset if they didn’t work on a netflix app for the UK.

… but it doesn’t list NetFlix under “Online Services” for the UK.

On the page where you can find more info they have the info below:

"

Choose from over 10,000 titles from Hulu Plus, CinemaNow and Blockbuster On Demand, or access your Netflix unlimited membership and watch TV episodes and movies on your big screen.*

*Hulu Plus subscription (US only), CinemaNow account (US only) and Blockbuster online membership (US only) required. Netflix is available in certain countries. Unlimited membership required. More information at www.netflix.com."

They refer to the Netflix.com website. Have you searched there already for support for Netflix > WDTV Live Hub Internet service for UK…

Otherwise you should create a ‘Live Hub Issue reporting’ in the correct format.

wth with WD

Other devices (including the _ WD TV Live Hub Media Center _) are not compatible.

I hope that they continue to support the live hub fully and do not repeat what they did to the WDTV HD first gen .

I just noticed the following…

The complete firmware update info for the ‘normal’ WDTV Live (2011 edition) is:

Release 1.06.04 (1/10/2012)

  • Supports BBC iPlayer content streaming service ( UK only ).
  • Supports Netflix movie streaming service in the UK and Ireland.
  • Resolved several language translation issues.
  • Resolved issue AAC and MP3 2CH audio outputs 7CH via HDMI pass-through to AV receiver.
  • Resolved movie thumbnail degraded photo quality issue.

  • General info:
  • Note: BBC radio mute function does not un-mute.

Let’s wait and see when they will release this for the Live Hub… It can’t take long i think.

After talking with WD tech support. I have been informed that netflix will be available on the WD tv live hub on the next firmware update. However they were unable to tell me when this update will be available., but it will be soon.

You must not have seen what I posted here.

That is unfortunate news but thanks for letting us know. I’ll probably buy a Roku when they become avaliable here.
