Need to Add to Existing Raid

I have an EX4100 with 2 x 4TB WDC Red WD40EFRX-68WT0N0 drives configured as a 4TB Raid 1.

I want to add two new 4TB drives to expand to 8TB total in Raid 1. I don’t want to lose the data.

What I’m hopin is I can “grow” the existing Raid 1 by just adding new drives. Can anyone confirm that? Also…does anyone know what are the current Red 4TB drives that would have replaced the legacy WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0 models?

Hi thompra,

You can migrate from RAID 1 to RAID 5 without losing data by adding the 2 new drive of the same capacity.

Thanks Alex…how about relevant model #'s for the two replacement drives? Example on that, can I use 4TB drives with a “higher” caching capability…in other words can I mix 64MB and 128MB coach drives or is that no advisable and or a waste of $$?

Hi thompra,

Yes, you can use the drive with the higher cache memory for better performance. Just make sure you use the drive of same capacity.
