N900 routinely locking up every 36 - 48 hours

Just an update: even with FastTrack QoS disabled, the in-use WiFi network still went down over the weekend. In this case, I had a notebook connected to the 5GHz WiFi and it would access the Internet for data roughly every 30-60 seconds. WiFi went down some time between Saturday night and Sunday morning. When I got to the office to check on things, 2.4GHz WiFi was still up and running.

Note that this pretty much rules out networking interference as the root cause, as there are no other 5GHz networks in range. I ran inSSIDer and there are no other 5GHz networks visiable at all. There are nine 2.4GHz networks visible, but most are below -80dB RSSI and none of them are on channel 11, plus 2.4GHz stayed up over the weekend as nothing was using it.

Best guess is that there’s some form of memory leak related to the WiFi traffic – the more traffic, the faster the WiFi goes down. But I don’t  have any details (yet) to confirm that hypothesis. All I know is that the WiFi crashes when there are clients connected every day or two, sometimes more frequently.

Jarred, this is very similar to what I was experiencing last weekend.

I was downloading a torrent and getting 1.9Mbps on my laptop connected to the 5Ghz signal and I would lose my connection to the Internet. Could not load web pages, Google Talk reported it was disconnected, but my torrents would continue to download with really good speeds. I could also access the router and my residential gateway, and I believe my NAS, so anything internal I seemed to be able to access, just not external. Resetting the N900 solved it until I started downloading torrents again.

I had turned off TasTrack+ but not WMM, thinking that might have solved the issue, but I have already returned the router. I also had the issue with the Internet LED on the front never lighting up and I continued to get notifications in the router admin that there was no active Internet connection, even though I could–when not downloading torrents–access the Internet without issue.

Maybe I should have kept it longer and played around a bit more, but after spending a few hours trying to get it to work I didn’t think it was worth any more time. I also felt that having to turn off FasTrack+ so I could get reasonable speeds on my torrent downloads (wouldn’t go over 1Kbps with it on) kind of defeated the purpose of paying for the router. It’s too bad because I really wanted to like the WD router and I would really like the 7GB ports.

Maybe I’ll keep watching and waiting for another firmware release to see if it resolves these issues. Oh yeah, I had updated to the latest firmware as soon as I could get in to the router config screen.

If you’re able to get this solved I’d be more than happy to hear what worked.

Thanks,

Kelly

Mine went from locking up every 3 days to locking up daily.

I’ll give WD one more firmware fix and if this doesn’t go away i’ll switch to NETGEAR.

I can confirm this problem still exists with the latest firmware. I just bought the N900 and before configuring my router I immediately upgraded to the latest firmware version. Within the first hour or so my wireless dropped. Couldn’t see any of my SSIDs  (Had 3, one for guest, one for 2.4ghz and one for 5ghz). After rebooting the problem went away for a few hours and then the same thing happened. I restored to factory settings and set up exactly the same thing except no guest SSID. About 12 hours later the wireless dropped once again. This time I couldn’t even access the the router through my wired connection so did a power off on the unit itself. I’ve only had this router for a few days and had to reboot multiple times which is unacceptable. I am within my 30 days and ordered another one from bestbuy online and will swap hardware to see if that is the issue. If not, it’s definitely going back and I’ll try another brand. I really want to make this work since I like the feature set, especially the 7 Ethernet ports which eliminates the need for another hub to accommodate all of my wired connections but having to reboot manually daily is not usable for me. Is there any logs I can send in to support to help identify the issue? Clearly this was not resolved in the latest firmware.

I have the same problem, but mine locked up 3 times today.  No wireless nor wired connection.  I also noticed that the WD Quick View drops out and when it is working, the temperature displays “Unknown.”

Well, yesterday I turned the router off and let it sit for about 1/2 hour and turned back on.  It’s been good since then except that the  WD Quick View still shows “Unknown” under “Temperature.”

I am having the exact same issue as everyone has stated abouve. I returned my first one due to thinking it was bad but the new one is doing the exact same thing. This really **bleep** for me as i do not have cable tv and stream movies only and it is very annoying to have to reset the router once during each movie it seems. One thing i have noticed thou is the router seems to get very warm on top when it has stopped working. My first one did the same thing. I did notice thou that the fan never runs so maybe they are over heating? Only reason i thinking this is becuase if i leave it alone and dont use wireless all day long it works but as soon as i put any load on it is when i gives out. First wireless drops and about a min or two after the wired drops out. If i hard reset it with out letting it sit a couple of mins it will just lock back up almost right away.

I’m having the same issue with the last firmware and the latest.  Not good.  It appears to gradually degrade with wireless access going first which prompts an attempt to login to the router which fails prompting a reset of the router.  Maybe it’s a heat issue?  Any thoughts from the WD people?

updated to the new firmware and it locked up again after 4 days. I’m going to try doing a factory reset one more time and see if that makes it better if not I’m bringing this piece of junk back to the store.  Luckily I’m still under my 30 days. It’s a shame because I really liked the 7 ports and 2 usb ports.  I also find that hard drives on USB 2 take a long time before they show up on my mac computer.

I’d just box it up and return it if I were you. I tried 2 units myself to eliminate defective units as the problem. Multiple factory resets and latest firmware and same result every time. I bought a Netgear and 0 problems after 3 days the way it should be. Shame on WD to sell these without fully testing and claiming they are ready for prime time. Was a complete waste of time. I also found the Netgear R6300 had better signal and a few more features so in retrospect I wish I just went with a more recognized brand to begin with.

I’ve had my N900 for 2 weeks now and it has been working fine… until now :frowning:

In the last few hours it has been repeatedly dropping the connection to the net every few minutes.

When i look at the logs i see that the DHCP on the WAN side has released and renewed it’s IP address each time it drops out.

Is this a similar issue to what everyone else is reporting, or is it something new?

I haven’t ruled out that it could be the Cisco DPQ3212 cable modem at fault.

Something I have found is I went all way back to factory firmware 1.02.X then loaded each update in order to current. Since doing this I have not had any more issues. But if i go from 1.02.X to current with out loading the in betweens it comes back like clock work for me and drops resume.

Can anyone please post links for all the firmware releases for N900 Central 2 TB? If Amdeus is corrrect, we need to do the upgrades in order, without skipping a release.

I downgraded to 1.03.11 since last week and everything is fine. The cooling fan spins when needed. I also added a cooling pad for only $6, installed spacers and now I have a nice cold air flow around the router:

That being said, I am wondering if I am missing any functionality by not upgrading to the latest firmware. Would the data transfer to the 2TB internal harddrive be faster on 1.05.12? I am getting about 3.5-4 MB/s on 1.03.11 via wifi.

Here is the actual latest  firmware  links to my net n900 Central . Which I believe is the same firmware as My Net  N900 .

sorry, it does not work for me. :(> Only 1.05.12 and 1.03.11 can be found with the above procedure.

Hi

I did the same procedure with Mynet n900 and downloaded all firmware versions. If you know they are the same it works.

Good Luck.

Hi

Just tested the above using 1.04.08   …this worked for me.

Excellent! Thank you very much!!!

Just completed the sequential upgrade to 1.05.12. I am starting stress testing now to see if the fan spins.
