My WD My Cloud Home 4TB Setup Issues
Hi,
I’ve been reading online and it seems like setting up the WD My Cloud Home 4TB is a common problem for many users. I recently plugged mine in for the first time, excited to ditch the data storage fees. Unfortunately, the advertised easy setup has turned into a frustrating nightmare.
I’ve tried everything I can find, including factory resets and using three different router configurations following online tutorials. Despite this, I’m still unable to configure the device.
I’m hoping someone can help me troubleshoot this issue. Could it be a faulty hard drive, a firmware problem, or something else? Is it possible to access the data on the hard drive without an internet connection? Additionally, can the firmware be updated without an internet connection?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!
Welcome to the My Cloud Home (MCH) subforum.
You may be a little late to the scene because it has been more than 7 years since its introduction and the MCH is actually much closer to its End of Life (EOL) than the beginning. There has been more than 67 firmware updates over the 7 years and what you have in a ‘NEWLY UNBOXED’ is actually produced a few years ago and has a dated firmware that is not ready for use. There may be refurbished MCHs on the market that has the latest firmware installed allowing those units to be ready for use out of the box but that is not confirmed.
There is only one way to update the firmware so that a ‘home’ user’s MCH can be usable and that is
- Enable UPnP on a compatible router
- Wait for the OTA (Over the air) updates
- It can be a week before the entire update sequence is over before the MCH is functional
Please read this thread and see if it is useful
How do i know if the device is “updating” . Is it slow or fast blinking? The box came with a promotion of 3 month subsciption to plex expiring in 2020 so it might be ( 4-5 years old)
Thanks
Did you buy this new, used or “refurbished/renewed”?
It is slow blink (breathing) LED. It is waiting for the WD server. You should follow the direction which you can find on the KBA (Knowledge Base)
Please note the critical notice. This is the reason a MCH with an old firmware cannot connect.
Please also note that although the KBA stated that it only takes 24 hours to update, that is not entirely correct. The My Cloud Home (MCH) will not do back to back firmware updates within 24 hours because the OTA routine does not allow it, probably because it could interrupt the file indexing routine that runs when a new firmware changes the file system, which does occur during major updates.
Critical:
My Cloud Home cloud access is not available to any device that is not at or above firmware level 9.4.1-101 after June 15, 2023.
Resolution
Make sure it is connected to a network router with an active internet connection.
Reboot to start the update.
The firmware update should happen within the next 24 hours.
An email and mobile app notification will be sent when the update is complete.
Connect the My Cloud Home to a different network if the firmware does not update.
