MyBookLive Trade-in program

I have received a notice of the trade-in program for the MBLD which has had some issues of late. My question is if I want to make the trade-in, I assume that I get the new drive and the time to set it up and to transfer my data from old drive to new drive before sending in the old drive. Since I only have 30 days to complete the transaction once a ticket is created, it is important that I understand the protocol.

Could I get an explanation of the trade in process?

I asked a customer service agent exactly the same question with the same reasoning and he just said they would let me know. And for now, to connect it directly to the PC with an Ethernet cable. When I told him it’s too far to do it, he told me to use Mycloud.com, which hasn’t been working with my HD for a long time now. They told me to reconnect it to my LAN which obviously has Internet connection, so it’s it’s just still unsafe… I questioned them about it, and they come up just “wait a few days until we have a solution” and then connect it back to the Internet… I explained I understand there is no solution… and the answer was… it’s a new issue for us with updates every day… I just think the have no fu**ing idea of what they’re doing and will improvise the solution as it comes…

I found that the device has a setting that enables and disable remote access in the UI. I am not sure if this is an effective deterrent. However if the setting is off, I cannot find the drive under Windows even if I know the full path to the share that I am looking for. A prior partition that I had set up was still working even with the remote access off. All of this is on my intranet, which does connect connect to the internet.

I found if I turned remote access on briefly, set up the net share on windows to the new sharepoint on the disk, and then turned remote access off, I was still able to see the mount point and it’s files, even after a reboot. Maybe this helps. Maybe this is a hole?

As this is a backup storage point for manual backups, I really don’t need the drive on the network all the time, but multiple systems do need access occasionally.

Well I hope this sorts it self out. I have had good luck with the MBLD for about ten years now, and was thinking of getting something more modern and researching what’s available before all of this came down. A reasonable price on a new, larger system would be a win.

It appears that the remote access setting also enables the Mycloud access. I cannot access my system now with the remote access off. I used it two weeks ago when remote access was on, before all of the problem came up. It worked OK for me. Remote Access is controlled via the Web interface to the drive. Again, I do not know if turning off remote Access is sufficient protection on the intranet connected to the internet. If anyone knows definitively, please advise.

Today I received the RMA instructions. They expect us to back-up our drives, return them first having to pay for the shipping fees and once they receive it, they will send the discount code. After this bullsh*t I think it’s time to say goodbye to WD for good.
