MyBook not detected by computer

Hi, 

I purchased a WD external harddrive a couple of months ago, it hasn’t been used but doesn’t seem to be registered by my computer usb port- i.e. nothing comes up when i insert the drive on either my usb or the face panel of the harddrive. I’ve checked the usb port, the power supply and the connections and all seem to be fine. Would anyone be able to help me with a solution?
