MyBook Drives Stuck in Read Only

I have a 4TB MyBook that was fully functional for 3 years until this last week, it was Read Only on my 2 Win 7 machines, but had full function on my Win 10 & 11 machines. Following the recommendations on this site I reloaded the Paragon S/W by clicking the link in Discovery. No change. Seeing that other had the same problem and not seeing any resolutions posted, I bought a Seagate 5TB. Upon connecting the Seagate to my Win 7 system, PnP downloaded a driver. The Seagate worked properly. I then reconnected the MyBook drive and low & behold it had write capabilities.

It would appear that the driver that PnP installed was what was needed for MyBook. Searching the all the Windows event files I was unable to see a name for the driver that Seagate installed. The log entry does show me name that was pulled down, but that name was just a win ID.

I know that the MBR has a limit of 4TB drives and that different drivers are need to use GPT, however my Win 7 systems have been writing to the MyBook for 3 years. I am also aware that native Win 7 starts to have intermittent problems with MBR drives over 2TB. But I don’t think all that is relevant to this situation.

My problem is solved, I only post this in case it helps anyone else that has this problem.

WD MyBook entering read-only mode is triggered by a hardware protection mechanism. To resolve this, you must use WD Drive Utilities to perform a factory reset or attempt to force unlock by shorting the ROM test points on the PCB.

Any idea what driver windows pulled in from the seagate that got your Mybook working again?
