Dear All,

I have bought new passport studio I yesterday. Now, I have problem uhhhh … !    the HDD canot be detected by mac book Pro (edition 2011) under OSX Lion  1.702 after doing firmware update. The screen is always showing “update firmware failed. Please exit and close all application and try again” Now the HDD canot be used and no hard drive detected on my mac book pro. I have tried to find how to solve the problem. I also try attach the HDD using my another notebook HP 5310m under Windows 7 Prof and my lenovo thik pad. The USB Hardware is detected but no driver can be updated. The driver indicated “? (UNKNOWN)” on device manager. The result is till same after installing driver SES.   The result is also same when dissable firewall and ant virus.

I am thinking almsot one night. Could be my HHD was locked. I saw it in smart display. But I canot unlock it because smartware software cannot detected the drive. (setup drive button cannot be used/ kliked.)  

Till today the light indicator of my new passport studio is only on when attached into my book pro or my HP 5310m and lenovo think pad. No HDD detected. So sad…I have new HDD but can not be used.

Then the price is also higer then Seagete Go Flex.  The price of  one passport studio I 500GB almost same 1 TB of seagete Free Agent Go Flex + ugrading cable to 3.0 USB or Fire wire. But  really like my passport studio I. 

any body can help me please…!!!..how to fix it?

When the firmware update fails on OSX, the best option is to try another firmware update ON WINDOWS. Try it out.

Thank you for advise. I did using window. Unfortunately the USB divice recognized as “UNKNOWN”. I had tried to download SES driver. Following the manual instruction. But this driver wasn’t recognized by  by windows to update WD USB interface. 

I am looking for  software to detect what 's going on inside chip sheet of WD after updated. Then shown, the chipset had  pure coding. It’s mean blank coding of chipset. Then I also knew the chipset manufacturer using by WD.

I am still curious what going on. Today, I bought one more of WD my passport studio. Then I won’t update the firmware nor smartware. Then, I was seeing that the existing firmware consist of coding  as following :

That’s clear , what’s going on with my first new passport. The downloaded of firmware make the chipset interface blank and back to original manufacturer coding. Unfortunately, when I did update using windows OS,  the screen tell me the update is fail. the web connection error. the frmware is out of date. The firmware you wish to download is same your device firmware. 

I also try update  using mac universal firmware updater. As the result,  screen tell me no firmware support your device.  

Now the conclution is how to uploded the right firmware into the chipset. Should be WD has stand alone firmware to be loaded into the chipset. 

Since, my fisrt new passport studion is new, I bought two days ago. It’s still under warranty. I return this one. And using the new one. 

But this is not solve porblem. Hope this is still to be investigate to help another user who has similar problem. I read alot of this problem not only in WD commonity. But alot of this problem readed outsite of WD web community.
