MY Passport no longer Recognized by Windows 10

My Passport has several years of files on it and has worked with my current PC (HP Envy); however now my PC is not reading it as a connected drive. It does not appear on File Explorer or Disk Management (a Disk 3 marked “unknown” appears in DM); however Open Devices and Printers lists My Passport as safe to eject.

My questions: how do I access the files on My Passport, and if I initialize or partition it, will I lose data?

There can be various reasons for an HDD to become unresponsive. Reconnecting the HDD won’t help in most of the cases. The HDD remains visible and may be detected by the system if you connect it to another PC, but it doesn’t respond.

You can try the below options to resolve the issue:

  • Run CHKDSK
  • Use an Antivirus & Anti-Malware tool
  • Re-install the drivers
