My Passport Essential SE causing crash

I just intalled a 1TB My Passport to replace a Seagate 500GB external drive. When I try to backup my files the backup freezes after about 10 minutes of backing up. When I try to use the mouse to click elsewhere  I head a loud beep and the computer freezes. I have to disconnect the power to restart. I’ve tried reinstalling the My Passport and when that didn’t work I tried backing up my files with the old Seagate. Now nothing works, it just keeps crashing everytime I try to backup.
