My passport 5tb wd50ndzw smart

Hello everyone, is this a normal trend for write speed?

I have been using the 5TB My Passport (WDC WD50NDZW-11BCSS1) hard drive for two years. I mostly use it to store films and back up photos, drivers, VHDs, and so on. On a few occasions, my media player has frozen in the same place, which led me to suspect some file corruption. I finally checked SMART and found that there were “197 current pending sectors = 628”. The WD utilities quick test showed green at the same time. I tried chkdsk, but it got stuck on 2% and remained there for half a day. The WD utilities full test got stuck on 10% for three hours. After a lengthy discussion with AI, I cleaned the disk and ran a sequential write test in Victoria to force the firmware to recheck and remap or mark the pending sectors as normal. I think the disk is subject to an RMA, so I am collecting data now. I just can’t find any information on SMART behaviour, such as whether pending sectors are shifted to relocated during write/format or if this is done by internal self-test only. SMART has not changed since I found the failures and throughout all my tests.

Have you looked at WDs web site and the information provided for your device?

The more storage space you use on your device the slower it will work. Do you have a way to defrag it?

I’m aware that performance can degrade as the drive fills up and that larger capacity usage can affect speed and access times. I do understand what defragmentation is and what it does, but in this case it’s a completely empty drive — the volume has even been deleted, so there’s nothing to defragment. It’s effectively a raw disk now.

The reason I raised this topic in the first place is the non-uniform performance I observed — the speed during linear write testing was not stable and showed repeated drops rather than a consistent pattern.

The full write test in Victoria took almost 17 hours, which seems reasonable for a 5 TB drive. However, the performance trend wasn’t smooth at all — there were numerous speed drops throughout the test, and that’s what concerns me.

The SMART data remained unchanged from start to finish. All pending sectors are still reported as pending.

After the write test, I started a read test based on the list of slow sectors identified by Victoria. During this test, the SMART attribute “Raw Read Error Rate” has increased to 25.

I’m also concerned that these speed drops may be occurring when the drive hits unstable or marginal sectors, which could indicate underlying surface or media issues and potentially lead to future failure.

I was surprised to see that HD Sentinel detected the start of the process and is actually showing progress for the WD Utilities test, which makes me more confident that it hasn’t simply frozen at 10%. The progress bar initially stayed at 10% for about 1.5 hours before jumping to 20%, which isn’t very informative, but that appears to be how the software reports progress.

You started off saying you stored films and backed up photos, drivers, VHDs, etc. to the drive.

For me, I own a 1st and 2nd generation WDMYCLOUDS. The 1st has OS3 and is used on my home network while the 2nd has OS5 and still works on the internet/online. When uploading files to either one the speed changes often as the data is moved from my computers to the device. When I want to move a large amount of data I normally do it at night when I am not using my computers.

I fully agree that speed fluctuations during normal file transfers can be caused by fragmentation, caching, and other factors.

What concerns me is that I’m seeing repeated speed drops during a controlled linear write test on an empty raw disk, where none of those factors should apply. The tests have also reported errors, which makes me wonder whether the slowdowns are related to problematic sectors rather than normal HDD behavior.

I’m not sure the drive is defective. I’m just hoping someone with more HDD diagnostic experience can tell me whether this behavior is normal or a potential warning sign.

The drive still has about a year of warranty left, so I’m not in a rush to RMA it. I simply want to make an informed decision and understand whether it’s safe enough to keep using for non-critical data.

I wouldn’t trust that drive with my data. The stalling issue alone should be enough reason to retire it, but the pending sectors are an even bigger reason.

By the way, I believe it’s an SMR model.

SMR of course. It’s a bit frustrating seeing issues like this on relatively new drives — I’ve already had to RMA a 3-year-old SSD that died suddenly, and now this HDD is under suspicion. At the same time, I still have some 10–12 year old HDDs and old SATA SSDs that are running perfectly fine.
