My Passport 250GB SSD - 12GB files takes up 150GB of space

I bought a MyPassport 250Gb SSD to store my production files for both my desktop and laptop.

It’s fast enough but when I tried to copy the second folder across, I was warned there wasn’t enough space.

On my laptop drive, the folder I copied takes up 12GB space. On the external WS SSD it takes up 158GB.

It looks like minimum file size (‘size on disk’) is 1 megabyte. Each file is rounded up to the nearest megabyte. Is this the sector size?

I develop software and there are a lot of small files and it seams that for this sort of use, the SSD has a capacity of about 20 Gigabytes

Is this because I have it password protected or just a WD SSD thing or (exFAT). I have been using SSD’s for a long time and haven’t noticed this before.

Can I reformat the drive so that I can store more than 20GB of files?
