MY Cloud-What a disaster

So for starters I have bought two external HD in the past that were not NAS but worked just fine. With that being said I am beyond disappointed with my purchase of my cloud . I get it out of the box. (looks nice). Plug into router , turns blue. The only thing I get is a piece of paper that says go to my cloud setup. I go to that and its searched for anything plugged into my network . Doesn’t find anything. I hit search again and again. Nothing. So I head to google. I find someone that says just find the IP and put that into you address bar and it will take you to it. the interface looks ok but now I am like trying to learn how to navigate. I somehow found how to create a user and did that. After researching more and more I opened my finder ( Imac) and see Icloud is listed as a drive. It wont let me drag and drop anything on it. So then I learn you have to do connect to the server from the menu above . For some reason it wont connect. Then I think maybe it because of the IMAC and go over to my laptop. I read more about setting up a static IP and reserving it. I create a one in the network portion of the settings in the My Cloud interface. I tried to map network drive a million times and finally got it. Long story there are way to many account you have to create, a ton of broken links. I have created like 4 accounts by now. So to keep it short here are my list of questions hopefully this isnt confusing.

1.) where do you find the model or make of your my cloud. (there are my cloud home , regular my cloud etc. At one point I was trying to add it on my mobile app and it wanted a security code and said it was listed on the sticker on my device ,but it wasnt. Then I learn older products dont have security codes or something. So that app didnt work

2.) When I am on the my cloud interface, where do you actually see the files you have uploaded .Can this only be viewed from the network drive on my pc? I just want to see my files online.

3.) What mobile app should I use?

3.) when I see the network drives there is my cloud and another one just for Media I guess and it uses Twonky. I tried to create a username and password for that.Again errors . Instead I used the option to log in with Facebook .No luck , errors. What is this?

At this point I have the drive on my PC as a shared drive but I want to be able to see this when I am not home . Just like a google drive. Why is this so hard.

Well, when you figure out what you bought, post back and maybe we can help.

how can I? its just a my cloud 4TB . Where can I find the exact model?

You can look at this WD page to see which My Cloud most closely matches your device. From there you can select your device and read the product user manual for more information on how to setup and use your device.

The My Cloud Home is not the same as a My Cloud device. The My Cloud Home is completely different and uses a different operating system than the My Cloud.

One can also look at the bottom of their device for the P/N value. In certain cases that P/N will differentiate submodules of certain My Cloud devices.

There should be a number on the bottom. Take a picture of the bottom and we can figure it out for you. Was it new when you bought it? How long ago?

Its this one, 4TB .

Ah, OK, so it’s a single drive my cloud. Look on the bottom. If the part number ends in -00, you’re screwed. If it ends in -10, then you can update it to OS5.

It def ends in 00

OK, so you bought it used (these were last made in 2015). Yo can not update it to OS5 which means after April next year you won’t be able to access it remotely. It’ll be just a local storage/backup/media serving device.

Which is lame. I literally just found the logon that shows my files. I don’t understand why there is my cloud which shows your general info and settings and then there is a logon idp.mycloud which actually shows my files. I can access this from my phone but not at work . (could be a work thing blocking it) . But I dont understand why you cant just see your files from the regular logon . Anyway what would you recommend for streaming movies to plex?

You can use it for local storage/backup/media serving device only. If you’re on Windows 10 you need to turn on SMB1 to see the drive/files on your local network. Your work network security is probably preventing you seeing it remotely but that doesn’t really matter as that ability will be turned off by WD in 2022. I use Kodi just fine for viewing movies on my NAS. That should still work fine with your older MyCloud.

Read the user manual for the first gen single bay My Cloud. It explains what the My Cloud Dashboard is for and what MyCloud.com is for. The user manual can be found at this link:
https://products.wdc.com/library/UM/ENG/4779-705103.pdf

For local network access one does not need to use MyCloud.com. One can access the local My Cloud using Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder. There are numerous mobile file manager apps one can choose from to use for local network access to the My Cloud when WD terminates remote access (MyCloud.com and the OS3 My Cloud app) next April.

If you already have a Plex Media Server setup on the local network just map the My Cloud Share(s) that contain the media as a Plex Library. Otherwise one can use the My Cloud Twonky Media Server (a DLNA server) to stream media to any local network DLNA client including Kodi and others. See the My Cloud Dashboard Help or the My Cloud User Manual for more information about how to enable Media Serving on each Share that contains your media.

I hope you didn’t pay a lot of money for this. They were not that expensive when I bought mine in a store like, 5 years ago.

The 1st gen mycloud does not have the horsepower to be a plex server.
I have an EX2 ultra; and while that runs plex; it can’t transcode.

This device will be fine as a network file repository for a plex server running on something more powerful (like a PC, a proper server, or another NAS).

Forget about remote network access. Security problems abound in the WD product line. Not sure I would expose even their newest stuff to the internet. Best thing to do is use it as a local device; with internet (WAN) access blocked at the router.

That’s what I am doing . I really only bought this to save on electricity and its working but I can say the experience with setting it up hasn’t been great. Too many account I have to create , errors , dead links.
