My Cloud EX4 SDK Reality or Myth?

I sent an e-mail to developer@wdc.com requesting information about the SDK and so far I’ve been given the silent treatment.

Does anyone know if the SDK is available and how to get it?

Thanks!

Hello,

I recommend you contact support directly.

Personal Cloud Support

Thank you.

I tried the e-mail support, but the WD salesforce registration does not work in IE or Chrome. You click sbumit and it doesn’t do anything, you click again and it submits a blank captcha and fails registration.

So, I called the US Personal Cloud technical support and I was told they only deal with issues in the hardware; he basically had no idea about the SDK. He gave me the Corporate phone number and told me to ask to be transfered to a software development team. The operator didn’t seem to know who to transfer to. Since they are in the West Coast I left a voice mail to Customer Technical Support.

I doesn’t sound too promising… will see.

I’ve been waiting for more information on the SDK too.

Folks,

We have addressed this issue internally, and emails should be responded to soon.

Can you provide any more details?

Sorry, there isn’t any real details to provide.

FYI - Support is still passing on incorrect info:

Thank you for your question.  We do not have any software development tools to allow you to create your own apps on the EX4. You can download and install 3rd party apps on the EX4.  We do not support the 3rdf party apps on the EX4. For your convenience I have provided you a link to the EX4 user manual. Please refer to chapter 8 page 83 for the EX4 and installing and using 3rd party apps.

The part that they don’t support 3rd party apps was pretty much expected and known. The part about dev tools (SDK) is unclear…in the email they say such a thing doesn’t exist. But we know it at least did exist once. I just am unable to decipher Bill’s 2nd last comment above…when he said emails will be responded to soon. Did Bill mean, emails to that address will be responded to with more details about how to get the SDK…or just that they’ll be responded to with the info that such an SDK doesn’t exist?

BTW, EX4Shot…expect your post to be edited by a mod to remove the email text on grounds that emails sent to WD customers are considered “private” and not to be shared with another  in 3…2…1…

I usually take precautions to remove appropriate/restricted/confidential info and have posted thier replies before.  (guess they didnt want the over divulging non specific John Doe rep name there) There was nothing in it exept displaying thier “lack of support” / misinformation.  (Unfortunatly something we are plagued with here.)  The rep didnt even know what thier own site read, but stated something as a fact and refering to a “scripted answer”.  If I wanted scripred, I would look at the FAQ because as most of us, I can read. ;]  (sorry, I digress)

Thats kind of what I was asking Bill for but he replied he had not more info.

So again we are kind of in limbo inbetween groups with varied knowlege/response levels.  Hopefully we will hear something soon.

The rep did reply when I called out his error and said “i was escalated”.  Think this is at least my 3rd or 4th…  No biggy.  Hope we hear something soon.

Another user of My Cloud Mirror has uncovered some helpful info. Thought folks in this thread might be interested to know of them, since the firmware code base for EX2, EX4 and My Cloud are same, with minor differences. http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud-Mirror/Will-changes-get-lost-on-firmware-upgrade/m-p/759400

I have been silent about this with the hope to actually be contacted by WD. I attempted a couple of times the support page, but last message I received last week was:

Dear Fabiano,

We received a response from management in regards to your inquiry. While we could confirmed that your request was successfully received and forwarded to the appropriate department, all the requests about the WD My Cloud EX4 SDK are not being handled by technical support, thus we do not have information on turnaround times nor what type of instructions will be provided to the developers.

We suggest you to patiently wait until the emails are responded.

Two weeks is already beyond my definition of soon. Maybe at WD the definition of time is a little more relaxed… :confounded:

WD has a page with 3rd party Apps GPL source code for  EX2 and  EX4. None of the source code downloads generate their respective bin file installation package. Doesn’t WD (or someone else) have to provide instructions how to build these bin files for applications licensed under GPL?

According to Git’s GPLv2 license (bold and underline added by me):

For an executable work, complete source code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable.

If this is a valid point, I wonder how I should pursue that.

Starting to feel more like myth…

I know WD took a week off for a coporate shutdown, but it has been more than 2 weeks since Bill replied and over a week since my ticket was escalated.

I have still not heard anything.  Anyone else have success or hear anything new?

Sorry, guys, we’re still looking into this.

+1

I am interested too in building package, I want to try setup a correct package for btsync and/or syncthing

Hi all,

I know this is an old thread sorry for bringing it up. But are there any updates on the SDK?

I currently using wdmycloud which I understand the build is completely different from mirror/ex2/ex4. While with wdmycloud I could cross-compile/rebuild 64k page size memory debian packages, I’m really interested to know what are the chances for ex4?

I’m considering to get the ex4 as I’m running nginx/php-fpm/mysql to host sites like owncloud7/wordpress4 and several custom fastcgi services on the wdmycloud which lacks processing power.

I had posted awhile back like two years ago with a problem similar to this issue. There is the downloadable sources and that includes a gcc precompiled package, but it would not execute on the embedded linux they had for some reason.

I think some clarification needs to had about what kind of development environment one needs to be able to build packages from source for the My Cloud EX*.

I’m pretty dissatisfied at this point with how long I was waiting for some SDK for the EX2. If anyone has good recommendations of RAID storage products with SDKs, I would be grateful. I’m probably going to turn to
