My book studio 2 wont see new harddrives

i’ve changed the harddrives cuz i had 2 x 250gb maxtor lying around doing nothing and i just wanted to try them out in raid 0 … but wd drive manager wont find them … only one at the time and they both are *status *“bad”* no matter how i put them in  … i know the harddrives work cuz i had them in my pc as internal drives and they are both working fine and newly formatted …  so problem is that i cant make a new raid0 with 2 new harddrives … why not? i cant even use them as normal external drives without the raid …  … i updated the firmware and drive manager but still no go … can someone help me ? using win 7 x64

regards

Hello,

We don’t recommend replacing the internal drives of your My Book Studio with different drives than the original ones as this may turn your drive unusable.

If your original drives failed, we recommend you use exact models and capacities as replacements.

hi … so what ur telling me is that i bought a product that i cant use for anything unless i buy the exact same harddisks again ? i cant even use it for normal external harddrive without the raidthingie ? if thats the case then u just lost a good costumer cuz thats just BS and it sayd NOWHERE when i bought the **bleep** thing that i was FORCED to use ur harddrives ONLY… most be something u can do about it … firmware update or something ?

Hello,

Unfortunately, is not possible to use another type of drives on the unit. This information is available on the page 27 of the user manual.

“Important: Only WD Caviar® Green™ hard drive assemblies can be inserted into
the My Book Studio II enclosure.”

hi … well its pretty hard to see that when ur at the store and gonna buy one isent it ? … cuz the manual is inside the box … maybe u should consider writing it on the front of the box so ppl know and can act acorddingly to that … had i known that i wouldn have bought it … its useless to me now …

thx for nothing … u should do a new firmware to change that … is that even legal ? …

What happened to the drives that were in there?

well first of all … does it matter ? … second … i took them out and placed them inside my computer to run in raid 0 … faster that way … and as i sayd … i have 2x 250gb hdd’s lying around doing nothing and 500 gb external is enough for me at the moment … i bought the thing so i should be able to do with it as i please … (warranty is out anyways) but it seems that i cant do that at all … im bound by u … .

You certainly have the right to do what you want with the drives, but we built the My Book Studio to run with those drives.  So, I guess you have a choice - use the drives in your computer, or use the drives in the My Book Studio that they were meant for.  In either case, if you want to use the Maxtor drives in an external, you will have to find a case that is compatible with them.  Ours isn’t.  And doesn’t have to be.
