My Book Power Issue

We’ve got a fairly old My Book drive for backups which isn’t being recognised by Explorer on multiple machines. Green light is on and USB cable shouldn’t be the issue as tested with multiple working cables. It just makes a repetitive quiet (almost pathetic) sound every few seconds.

Does this sound like the power unit is dead?

If so, what are the options?

Can it be taken out for use in a caddy or similar SUB to IDE cable?

Anything else?

cheers

Hi, try using another compatible power supply, also check the disk management window.

It maybe the power supply see if you can find it here http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1378/session/L3RpbWUvMTMyMDE3MTc3OS9zaWQvak9TMVcxSWs%3D  If this is a drive with Smartware the data is hardware encrypted and connecting the drive without the  circuit board will only get you encrypted data.
