just recently my drive has decided to lock itself up! It doesn’t show in the drive list and no tricks seem to make it appear. I have noticed ever since I first installed the drive that in my drive’s list there is a “CD Drive (F:) WD Unlocker” listed. I only have one CD disk drive and it’s empty so don’t understand why it shows that. I also have never ever assigned a password to the drive.
BUT, if I double click it a dialogue box opens telling me that the My Book is locked and asking if I want to unlock it. It works and then the drive shows on the drive list and everything works.
So now for the question:: How or what is causing the drive to go into a locked state and is there a way to prevent it doing so in the future. Absolutely NOT interested in it being able to do that especially on its own.
Hello,
If you haven’t set up any password encryption on your My Book, I would recommend that you back up your data and then run a diagnostic test using DLG (Data Lifeguards Diagnostics) as it seems the partition on the drive is corrupt.

What is the model number of your My Book?
Don’t see a model # anywhere. I do see a P/N and a ser # though. It’s a 3TB My Book and I believe I got it somewhere around 2012. Been a good unit , until now.
OK, I replied to your request, so now what? It’s still getting locked up somehow and am starting to get squeamish about having my data on a drive that seems to be failing and not getting answers.
@Michael_OBrien Without a part number, there’s not much I can do to help, but if the WD Unlocker is there, at somepoint someone locked the drive using WD Security. Only way to remove the unlocker is to format the drive.
OK, A Part # I have, not a model #.
PART # - WDBACW0030HBK-01
SER # - WCC11T0869155
R/N 3C3
OK, if that’s the case then it looks like someone did set up a password and the hint means nothing. So there is no way to break into the drive through a backdoor or something?
Also, what happens if the unlocker prgm gets deleted somehow?
But since this ‘locking’ has just started, what scenario’s would cause it to lock up? I’ve noticed that Unlocker icon for years, so this ‘locking’ just started. Why?
@Michael_OBrien did you recently update your computer or uninstall WD Security?
A password may have been set and removed using WD Security Software, the system updated and WD Security is not starting at boot or was uninstalled which means the VCD will prompt you to unlock the drive.
just an update; i’d given up hope on remembering the password and moved all my stuff to another drive (should have copied it all as you will see). After 2 days, it all got done and I got ready to erase the drive and start over. The eternal optimist that I am, I tried a couple of passwords that should have matched the hint and the second one took!!
Yes, I had tried it before so not sure why it didn’t work.
Now i’m wondering if when I was trying to remember my password, if the drive security locked me out after too many unsuccessful attempts and didn’t notify me that I was locked out for a set amount of time or something like that. Could that have happened?
I will now be in the process of moving all of that data back to the My Book and yes I did go ahead and erase the drive just for the heck of it.
All of this still doesn’t explain the ‘why’. 2 days now and everything seems to be working correctly, crossing my fingers.
also forgot to tell you that Windows did do an update recently and like some other updates, it may have caused the problem. I absolutely HATE Windows 10, thinking about going back to a file folder and typewriter.
