My Book Live 3Tb + Samsung 40es5500 + 8Gb HD movies = Incorrect file sizes?

Hello everyone,

  1. I connected my 3Tb My Book Live and put some 8Gb (1080p HD) movies into the public folder (transfer speed was acceptable for wifi).

  2. I accessed My Book Live over Samsung Smart TV DLNA setting

  3. I open the public folder and tried to open the files but get the message “the selected file is currently not supported”

Additional info:

  • when viewing the thumbnail I noticed the size is incorrectly given as 50Mb. However when I open the public folder with my laptop it shows the correct 8Gb file size

  • the file is .mkv format

  • the My Book Live is in the default format (I guess FAT 32?) as I didn’t format it after setting it up.

Any ideas to help? I searched “incorrect file size + TV” on the forum but didn’t find my specific problem. The closest post I found was: http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-HD/File-size-issues/m-p/51490/highlight/true#M1967

Thanks,

Fabian

more additional info:

  • MyBookLive Version: 02.11.09-053 : Core F/W

  • Samsung TV accepts .mkv format and FAT32 drives according to user manual (also, I connected a FAT32 USB drive with a 2.5Gb .mkv movie and that one played with no problems)

UPDATE #2:

  • ok so I played around some more and moved an .avi file (3.5Gb in size, so under the dangerous 4Gb limit) onto My Book Live and tried playing it from my Samsung TV → it works!

  • I moved a .mkv file (futurama episode for those who care ≈ 400Mb) onto My Book Live and tried playing that through my samsung TV. This time it showed the incorrect file-size again and would not play on the TV.

According to Samsung .mkv is supported on their TVs, and up to now over USB I was able to play .mkv formats without any problem. Does someone have an idea for a fix?

UPDATE #3

Ok so I found out how to access the TwonkyMedia Server connection ( http://NAS-IP-ADDRESS:9000/config ).

Once in the settings I first changed the horrible default setting for viewing folders (“favorites”, who the **bleep** needs that, I want to see my folders by default!). Secondly I went to the Media Receivers tab and selected the connection associated with my samsung TV.

Then I changed the media client from “generic media receiver” to samsung TV, as I had read on other threads that this could be the issue.

Alas, problem still persists. Samsung TV still sees .mkv file sizes as being 40-50Mb instea of 400Mb-8Gb and will not play them.

Any ideas? At this point I am considering whether to wait for the WD My Book Live update (which as been promised for months I read) or buying and installing Twonky Server version 7 myself.

UPDATE # 4

Ok I found this great page and am testing the process now, will let everyone know how it goes.

I am still pissed off about having to spend €15 extra just to get the NAS to stream media to my TV. Not as advertised WD, for this reason and for the last 3 days of searching forums I would not recommend your product to a friend.

SUCCESSFULLY UPDATED TO TWONKY 7.08 MKV FILES WORK!

No thanks to WD however, really dissapointed in you guys.

Last tips: if you do not have a windows pc you will not be able to download PUTTY, to get around that difficult first step:

  1. start Terminal app (just search terminal in finder)

  2. type:
         ssh root@MYBOOK-IP-ADDRESS

  3. enter password:
         welc0me

  4. continue with this guide: http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/forum/t-459592

i have the same problem. after this update the subtitles works? if i have a .mkv movie with a separated subtile .srt
