My Book Essentials USB 2.0 stopped working after software update

My Book Essentials USB 2.0 stopped working after I updated the software from the WD site and all the on line help support said was that updating the software would not effect the units performance so I’m dead in the water and of course I have my PC backed up and have other critical files on this unit from my last PC.  Any help is much appreciated.

After doing the check list from trouble shooting it looks like my drive went out after about 4 months of backup as I purchased on 11/10/2010 althought it’s been out for at least 2 months and WD wasn’'t any help.  Therefore I’ll be taking back to Best Buy today to replace/upgrade.
