My Book Essential 2TB - trying to recover data

I have a My Book Essential 2TB drive that the enclosure died on.

I took the drive out and plugged it into my onboard SATA controller to recover the data from the drive, but am unable to do so. All I get is an ‘Unknown Partition Type’ and the drive is unreadable under both Windows XP and Linux.

How can I recover my data?

Or has Western Digital’s infinate wisdom in sticking everyone with that Virtual CD and their inferior Smartware software caused me to lose nearly 2TB of data?

I have been a big fan and user of Western Digital drives in the past (11 WD drives on just this 1 computer alone), but I am really beginning to change my mind about that after seeing this ■■■■.

I can’t offer a reason for your problems, but could we see the partition table and boot sector with Microsoft’s Sector Inspector?

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt which you can then upload to a file sharing service so that we can examine it.
