I have a My Book Essential 1 TB I used to backup a desktop, using Smartware.  That desktop is now being recovered with the help of Dell.  When and if it does come back, I don’t want to reload the WD software.  I would like to just use the my book as an external drive.

Question is: the drive is locked, can I just plug it in and format it? Or  must I re-install the WD software, ---- and then what?

I think you need to try password 5 times and a prompt will appear asking to erase drive. That will wipe all data. I would also format again from your PC after erase.

I will certainly try your suggestion as soon as the gal in India and I have the desktop whole and stable again!
