My new My Book 8TB is suddenly showing as not initialized on my Windows 10 PC. I have ~3TB of data on it, so I would like to understand if there is any chance of recovering that data before I give up and reformat.

You can try with Windows alternate data recovery tools to recover important data from the drive, then proceed to reformat.
