Why is the WD Apps preloaded on the drive an old version even though I purchased the drive recently? The only way to get the latest version is from the website.

The apps are loaded on the drive when they are manufacturer and the version that you have is a My Book Essential that was manufactured a some time a go.
Please note that you can download the apps from the WD Support site.

This is the newest model of the WD My Book, it’s not the older Essentials model. It has 4TB capacity and I bought it from Staples for $129.99.
