My 80+ mkv files with AAC audio won't produce any sound

How much could the AAC 5.1 license cost? I thought AC3 was the bigger pain. I had to pay for that codec to work with Sony Vegas, which had AAC support included. The video and audio codec issues are a real pain and beyond the comprehension of the average user. Most just want to hook up their device and have it work without having to spend hours on the internet like a patent researcher trying to find out why it doesn’t work. I remember my first high-end DVD player that supported SACD and 5.1 audio/video. It has about a 2 inch strip of logos for the different codecs supported. Now, an A/V device has about a 6 inch long strip of codecs printed on it. It really needs to be simpler.
