.mp4 "unsupported" after changing file extension from .m4v

My new, with latest firmware, WD TV Live refuses to play .m4v files and, after looking through the boards and changing the file extension to .mp4 (I just changed the extension name, I didn’t re-encode), continues to refuse to play the files even though it does now seem to recognize the new extension.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure you give the unit time to update any changes on the server side if you’re using it over the network, although it sounds like you did.  I’ve been going the opposite direction from .mp4’s to .m4v’s to get smooth video playback and I’ve had problems when I didn’t give it time to sync up the filename changes.

If both .mp4’s and .m4v’s aren’t playing though you may have a problem with the encoding.
