I’m trying to move all of my data from my (very old) MacBook onto my brand new Dell/Windows laptop – my Mac is currently running elCapitan, my Dell is Vostro 3400, running Windows 10 Pro.
I was able to format my external drive (easy store portable) for my mac, and back-up my entire system on it. However, now that I plug it into my windows, I hear the little chime when my computer recognizes something has been plugged into the USB port… but nothing appears in the window. When I open the file folder, the computer doesn’t recognize that something is plugged in.

As you used the same drive in Mac system before, now if you want to use the drive in Windows system then you may need to change the format of your storage drive and then check if that works. Further, you can also try below fixes to resolve the issue:
- Initialize the drive or drive partition
- Change/Assign drive letter
- Update Disk drivers
- Enable drive in BIOS
