Motion Detection vs Area Detection

Can somebody explain what the difference is? Is one better than the other? I’m trying to minimize the false alerts from bugs and weather.

Motion Detection … detect motion and record

Area Detection … focuses on a used defined area where to detect motion and record. (bugs and weather will still affect this)

example from the User Manual … eliminating trees or plants (which sway in the breeze) will lessen motion detection alerts.

Isn’t this the same thing as motion detection with masking?

Basically these are the same except for the shape of the area. Motion detection allows you to select the area by grid, so you could a create a doughnut shape or multiple areas.
