.MKV Files can someone PLEASE clear this up for a newb

HI 

Just a quick qustion someone may help me out with.

On a WD Live TV (playing from an external HDD) some MKV files play fine (most actually), some don’t play, and some kill the box when you attempt to play them (requiring a reset)

Can anyone tell me why this is ? and what/how to check on the file before attempting to play
