The setting Media Library On or Off, what’s the difference?

What are the (dis-)advantages of turning this on or off?

It’s only applicable if you use USB drives.   If you use everything via network, then it does NOTHING.

Enabling it primarily allows enhanced searching / sorting capabilities/

Okay, I don’t use USB, so I disabled it.
