Led turned red. What happens with my Data on returning?

Hi,

my cloud tries to install the new Firmware some times. It always failed for no reason. Now it stopps to try it anymore and decided to become a Brick with red LED turned on. If the only chance to get a working cloud again is to return it. I aks myself what will happen to my Data it is not only a question of loosing all my data what is really awful but of privacy.

Thanks for your help!

depends on why it is red, if the drive failed sending it back of keeping it an losing the $$ are the only choices

any chance it is too hot? turn it off for a couple of hours to cool and try again

did you try the system only / 40 second restore?

If you are comfortable with Linux you could pull the drive and mount it on a Linux system, this will void your mycloud warranty unless you get WD permission 1st

If the drive is still ok you can search for brick or de-brick and try some of those options, this will also void warranty

Hi,

thanks for your answer! I have turned it off for more than a day so no chance that it is to hot. The 40 seconds reset doesn’t seem to has any effect. I plug in the power cord and push the botton the same time for 40 seconds right? I can hear noices that sound like there ist a hard drive issue. When it starts up everything sounds ok but after some time it can only heare two short crack again and again as system can not find anything useful

I’m thinking about trying und unbrick.

Kind regards

with sound like that it sounds like the actual drive is bad

can you get into the UI at all? if so diagnostics may tell you the issue

unfortunately i can not get into the ui. If the reset by using the button works - can i use ssh or do i have to activate it by using the ui?

the SSH access need to be activated in the UI so not an option if you have not dones it yet. I seem to recall the networking is not active with the red light but it was worth a try

Hello,

i’ve opened it to get more Details. The smart read error rate was to high and all tests failed. I gave it a chance and let many tests and repair tools run also the one of western digital no chance it allways failed so the unbrick instruktions also didn’t work. Seems to be HDD Hardware failure. Now i try the RMA but i need some luck because you can see that i’ve opened the Case. Any experiences about the getting a replacement even when the case was opened?

So you went and opened the case without bothering to call WD first about your issue?  I would not be surprised to have them tell you you’re out of luck.

I do believe that data security is something WD takes seriously, and I can’t imagine them not having a procedure in place to deal with personal data coming in on RMA’d drives.

I opened a support case in Germany. They told me i’ve to contact a wd authoritzed Partner on my own costs for getting my Data back an go on RMA. If I return it wd is just deleting the Data. That don’t suprises me because it will be very expencive for wd if they deal with everyones problems so they have their standard procedure.  In my case it was easy for me to save my Data because the partition was intact but i had no chance to deal with the Hardware failures. I hope wd will be accomondating.
