I am disappointed that my July '09 My Book is crapping out.

Many new remote hard drives have a 3 year warranty that would have covered this, but it looks like I am stuck with a one year from WD.

I won’t buy another.

Yea, I quite agree with you there. Mine too, broke recentally, just a couple of months after warranty expiry… Some sort of problem with the USB port on the HD. The only way I see that it can be fixed it if I could somehow get a replacement circuit board that controls the whole device.
